NECEC Converter Station-Northern New England Concrete Excellence Award Recipient 2024
The New England Clean Energy Connect (NECEC) will deliver Canadian hydropower to the New England grid via a new HVDC line connecting in Lewiston, Maine. This project reduces greenhouse gas emissions, lowers electricity costs across the region, and generates significant benefits for Maine, including job creation, increased tax revenue, economic growth, and cleaner air.
The transformer pad and foundation presented significant challenges for the N.S. Giles team, primarily due to a tight schedule requiring all concrete work to be completed, cured, and backfilled by mid-July to receive transformer shipments. The team was divided into three crews: one focused on precise transformer foundations to prevent vibration, while two others constructed the blast walls in phases to ensure proper curing. Using two 80-ton RT cranes required strategic coordination and daily safety planning. From March 18, 2023, to July 5, 2024, the team worked long hours, including weekends, to complete the project while simultaneously building other site foundations, pier pedestals, and standalone structures.
