MMC Helipads

In 2018, NS Giles was contracted by Turner Construction for the Maine Medical Enabling Project. A key component of this contract was constructing a new helipad on the expanded roof of the existing hospital.

The helipad design featured two landing pads, a connecting slab between them, and another connecting slab extending to the Richards Building. All concrete work was supported by a shoring system designed by Doka Formwork, which was integrated into the steel framework for stability. Once the concrete was placed, the shoring and formwork were removed.

One of the primary challenges was the significant height at which materials and concrete needed to be transported—120 feet from the ground to the top of the helipad. Crew members accessed the site via a stair tower mounted on the building, followed by another stair tower leading to the top. Materials were transported using a hoist elevator provided by Turner, while concrete was pumped using a 61-meter boom pump.

With the formwork in place, the focus shifted to the concrete placement process, which presented additional challenges due to winter conditions. To ensure proper curing and finishing, the team implemented extensive heating measures, constructing temporary tents around the structure to maintain the necessary temperature.

When it came time to place the concrete, there was no margin for delay. Strict deadlines had to be met to ensure the helipad’s timely opening. The concrete was successfully placed, the pads were painted and striped, and all systems were thoroughly tested. As a result, the helipad opened on schedule.

This helipad was a crucial element of the Maine Medical Center expansion. With direct access to a new elevator leading to the Emergency Room, it significantly reduced patient transport time during critical emergencies. Additionally, the upgraded helipad accommodates much larger aircraft than before and can support two helicopters simultaneously if needed.

NS Giles is incredibly proud to have contributed to this vital expansion, enhancing emergency medical services and bringing lasting value to the local community.
