6 Heat Safety Tips for Construction Workers

Tips to Stay Cool & Safe on the Job Site

As temperatures rise, so does the risk of heat-related illnesses—especially for those working in physically demanding outdoor environments like construction. At NS Giles, we know that safety is just as important as craftsmanship. That’s why we’re sharing six essential heat safety tips for construction workers to help you stay cool, focused, and protected during the hottest months of the year.

1. Stay Hydrated on the Job

Drinking water regularly is the most effective way to prevent heat exhaustion. On job sites, it’s easy to forget until you’re already dehydrated. Make hydration part of your routine by sipping water throughout the day—even if you’re not thirsty. Avoid caffeine, sugary drinks, and energy beverages, which can increase dehydration.

Pro tip: Keep a refillable water bottle within reach at all times and take frequent water breaks.

2.Wear Lightweight, Breathable Work Gear

What you wear directly impacts how your body handles heat. Choose lightweight, moisture-wicking, and breathable clothing to keep your core temperature down. Light-colored fabrics, wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and neck wraps offer added protection from the sun.

3. Take Regular Breaks in the Shade

During peak heat hours—typically midday to early afternoon—it’s crucial to schedule cool-down breaks in shaded or ventilated areas. Rotating labor-intensive tasks and pacing yourself throughout the day can prevent overexertion and heat stress.

4. Eat Light, Stay Energized

Heavy meals can make you sluggish and increase your internal body temperature. Stick to light, hydrating snacks such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. These foods help maintain energy levels without weighing you down.

5. Use Cooling Gear and Tools

Personal cooling gear like chilled towels, portable fans, and ice neck wraps can provide immediate relief on sweltering days. Having access to these simple tools can reduce the risk of heat stroke and help maintain job site productivity.

6. Know the Signs of Heat Illness

Understanding the early signs of heat-related illness is essential. Watch out for symptoms like dizziness, nausea, headaches, confusion, rapid heartbeat, or excessive sweating. If you or a coworker experience these symptoms, stop work immediately and alert a supervisor.

Keep Construction Safe All Summer Long
